        David Armitage ~

David Armitage was born in Tasmania in 1943 and studied at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. In 1967 he moved to New Zealand where he had many one man and group shows.

In 1973 a survey exhibition of his work toured the major public galleries of New Zealand.

Since 1974 he has lived in the UK where he has exhibited widely, including shows in London, Edinburgh, Sheffield, Liverpool, Brighton & Guildford. Armitage’s painting is ultimately derived from Abstract Expressionism, but additional influences stem from his formative years spent in Australia and New Zealand.

Writing about his work, Armitage comments: ‘The great parallel with my work is music, in which everything is derived from sounds – it doesn’t go outside itself – it is what it is. And although painting cannot rid itself of suggestions and subjects, firstly and finally it is marks and the interrelation of marks, colour and space, marks made with genuine feeling – hoping for a genuine response for the painting as an object that will give great and lasting pleasure.’

His work is represented in public and private collections in New Zealand, Australia, the USA and Europe.
